A normal, healthy cervical spine is equipped with alordotic curve, or a forward curve when viewed from the side. Over the years poor posture or a traumatic event, such as a car accident, may cause the curve to become straight or even reverse. This reversal makes the muscles of the neck that are designed to hold up the head, work harder than usual. When the curve of the neck is straight, the head is positioned anteriorly of where it is anatomically supposed to be. The added stress causes the muscles to become fatigued and sore. The average human head weighs between 8 and 12 pounds. To put into perspective the stress that is being placed on your neck, try holding a ten pound weight in your hand with your wrist flexed and your palm up. Now do the opposite and extend your wrist with your palm facing down. If you tried this you know the latter is more difficult. If you have a straight cervical spine, this is how your neck muscles feel all day for months or even years. This dysfunction in your neck can cause tension headaches or migraines. A straight spine may also lead to more severe problems like early degeneration and arthritis.
If you suffer from headaches or migraines get your spine checked by your chiropractor today to see if you have a reversed cervical curve.
